Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game franchise and media property created for Sega, centered on an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog with supersonic speed who battles the scientist Dr. Eggman, also known as Dr. Robotnik, and his robot army.13 The series began in 1991 with the release of the platformer Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, and the character became the company’s official mascot.13 As of November 2022, the games had sold about 1.5 billion copies worldwide, and the franchise has spread into an animated television series, comics, films, and extensive merchandise.13

Origins

Sonic was conceived at the beginning of the 1990s as Sega’s answer to Nintendo’s dominance of the video game market.10 In 1990 Nintendo was, in the account of one retrospective, king of the industry, with the NES entrenched in a quarter of U.S. homes and Super Mario Bros. 3 grossing more than $500 million in America alone.10 Sega’s Master System had been trounced by the NES in nearly every territory except Europe and Brazil, and president Hayao Nakayama pinned Sega’s hopes on launching the next-generation Genesis — essentially a scaled-down version of its arcade hardware — before Nintendo’s Super Nintendo could arrive.10

Aware that arcade conversions alone could not win mindshare, Nakayama challenged his company to create a mascot that could star in a game showing off the power of the new Genesis and sell over a million units — a character that would be to Sega what Mickey Mouse was to Disney.10 The challenge was answered by Sega’s AM8 division, later renamed Sonic Team, a 15-man group that toyed with many animal submissions, ranging from rabbits to kangaroos, with one Sega of America executive pushing for a squirrel out of affection for Rocky & Bullwinkle.10 An early concept had a speedy character who could pick up and throw objects; when that mechanism proved too complicated, it was dropped in favor of a character who rolled and plowed through enemies, and the idea of spikes was added to make the rolling ball more lethal.10 This narrowed the candidates to an armadillo and a hedgehog; the hedgehog won, and a character code-named “Mr. Needlemouse” was born.10

The game was built by three then-unknown developers who became the original Sonic team.10 Character designer Naoto Ohshima produced the creatures and worlds; Hirokazu Yasuhara served as chief level and game designer, responsible for how the game felt and played and joining as the third member of the team after Naka and Ohshima; and Yuji Naka, a programmer fresh off Phantasy Star, nearly single-handedly programmed the game, including its physics effects.108 Naka had nearly not joined Sega at all, having been turned down by Namco because he lacked a college degree.10 To distinguish the Genesis from Nintendo’s hardware, the trio focused on speed: the Genesis had a CPU running at 7.6 MHz against the Super Nintendo’s 3.58 MHz, and this difference became the game’s central focus and the source of the character’s name.10 Sonic’s levels were designed with springs, slopes, and loop-de-loops to force the player to progress quickly.10

Ohshima has described the American influences on the design directly.12 Sonic is blue because that is Sega’s more-or-less official company color, while his red and white shoes were inspired by the cover of Michael Jackson’s Bad, whose contrast Ohshima likened to a Santa Claus color, and which he thought suited a character whose legs spin as he runs fast.312 Ohshima has said that Sonic was squarely aimed at the U.S. market, in contrast to Sega’s NiGHTS into Dreams, which was chiefly made with Japanese and European audiences in mind.12

Release and expansion

Sonic the Hedgehog was released on June 23, 1991, at a time when Nintendo’s Super Nintendo was already in stores generating buzz on the strength of Super Mario World.10 Sega of America, under president Tom Kalinske, launched a marketing campaign that directly compared the Genesis to its rival, depicting the Super Nintendo as slow and clunky and the Genesis as speedy and cool, with the theme of speed exposing Mario as a slow plumber.10 One advertisement attached a Genesis to a Formula One racing car while showing the Super Nintendo as stationary.10 The tactic, unthinkable in Japan, was approved by Nakayama, who told Kalinske, “It’s your call. That’s why I hired you. Do whatever you think is right.” 10

The original game spawned a long line of Genesis sequels, including Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992), Sonic the Hedgehog CD (1992), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1993), and Sonic & Knuckles (1994).1815 Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced Miles “Tails” Prower, an anthropomorphic fox who accompanies Sonic against Robotnik’s space fortress, the Death Egg.18 It was developed by Naka’s team in the United States at the Sega Technical Institute, a studio established by Mark Cerny, while Sonic CD was made in Japan and directed by Ohshima.212 Ohshima has recalled that Sonic CD, built around time travel as a play mechanic in which the levels changed around the player, was conceived as a CD version of the original Sonic rather than a numbered sequel, and that the two teams exchanged notes on the design each was aiming for.12 Ohshima went on to design NiGHTS into Dreams and later founded the studio Artoon, known for Pinobee and Blinx.1012 Yasuhara created the first 3D Sonic game, Sonic R, and later joined Naughty Dog to work on the Jak & Daxter series before becoming senior design director at Namco Bandai Games America.188

Characters

The series has built up a large recurring cast around Sonic.13 Sonic collects golden rings and can roll into a concussive ball to attack enemies, and has been shown running across water and climbing walls.13 His friends include Miles “Tails” Prower, a mechanically inclined two-tailed fox; Knuckles the Echidna, a red guardian of the Master Emerald and Sonic’s friendly rival; and Amy Rose, a pink hedgehog and Sonic’s self-proclaimed girlfriend.1317 Later additions include Shadow the Hedgehog, an artificially created “ultimate life form” made with Black Arms DNA by Professor Gerald Robotnik; Silver the Hedgehog, a psychic hedgehog from the future; Blaze the Cat, a pyrokinetic princess protecting the Sol Emeralds; and Metal Sonic, a robotic double.1317 Other recurring characters include Rouge the Bat, a treasure-hunting government spy; the robot E-123 Omega; and the Chaotix Detective Agency members Espio the Chameleon and Charmy Bee.17 The primary antagonist across the series is Dr. Eggman, the scientist bent on turning the world’s animals into robots.1315

Adaptations and other media

Beyond the games, Sonic has appeared in animation, comics, and film.13 Paramount Pictures released a live-action Sonic the Hedgehog film in 2020, directed by Jeff Fowler, in which Sonic embraces his new home on Earth and teams with a human, Tom, played by James Marsden, to stop Dr. Robotnik, played by Jim Carrey.1614 Ben Schwartz voiced Sonic, and Yuji Naka received a writing credit alongside Pat Casey and Josh Miller.1416 The film, rated PG and running one hour and 39 minutes, holds a 6.5 rating on IMDb from about 194,000 users as of July 2026, and was followed by a sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in 2022.16

Numerous classic Sonic titles have been re-released across later platforms; the original Sonic the Hedgehog has appeared on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console, in compilations such as Sonic Mega Collection on the GameCube and Sega Genesis Collection on the PlayStation 2, and remained, in one reviewer’s words, “still fun to run in Sonic’s shoes, even after 16 years.” 4 Later franchise entries have continued through the 2020s, including Sonic Origins, released June 23, 2022, and Sonic Superstars, announced for the fall of 2023.19 Newer spin-offs have leaned on crossover content: Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, promoted in 2026, was announced to add guest content from franchises including Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Godzilla, and Evangelion.19
