Divinity
A long-running fantasy role-playing series in which the gods of Rivellon fall silent and ordinary mortals are summoned to ascend in their place.
Divinity is a series of fantasy role-playing video games developed by the Belgian studio Larian Studios and set in the recurring world of Rivellon, whose central conceit is the player’s quest to “become Divine”.25 The franchise encompasses single-player and party-based role-playing games, a tabletop adaptation, and a forthcoming title that takes the series name as its own, all unified by a setting in which the Divine is dead, the Void approaches, and dormant powers stir within the protagonists.12 Larian presents the line as “the complete award-winning saga of destiny, sacrifice, and the rise to Divinity,” inviting players to return to the beginning of Rivellon’s legend.2
The franchise’s earlier entries are Divine Divinity, Beyond Divinity, Divinity II: Developer’s Cut, and the strategy hybrid Dragon Commander, which together established and elaborated Rivellon as the saga’s persistent setting.2 These games, alongside the later Original Sin titles, are presented by Larian as a single continuous body of work spanning destiny, sacrifice, and the rise to godhood.2
Original Sin
Divinity: Original Sin — Enhanced Edition was developed and published by Larian Studios and released on 27 October 2015.3 It revised the original game, which had been named GameSpot’s PC Game of the Year for 2014, adding hours of new content, new game modes, full voiceovers, split-screen multiplayer, and thousands of further improvements, all set in “the epic world of Rivellon”.3 The Enhanced Edition is a turn-based, party-based, co-operative fantasy role-playing game with character customization and an open world, carrying user tags including RPG, Turn-Based, Co-op, Fantasy, Adventure, Party-Based RPG, Story Rich, and CRPG.3 On Steam, 86% of its 11,591 user reviews were positive, and 83% of the 234 reviews in the most recent thirty-day window were positive.3
, released in 2017, is the series’ best-known entry, described by Larian as a critically acclaimed role-playing game that “revolutionized the genre”.2 Set after the death of the Divine and the approach of the Void, it invites players to choose their role in a BAFTA-winning story and to explore a world that reacts to who they are and the choices they make.2 Players venture solo or as a party of up to four, but only one of them will have the chance to become a god.2 The game offers six unique origin characters, each with their own backgrounds and quests, alongside the option to create a custom protagonist from five races — Human, Lizard, Elf, Dwarf, or Undead — in a world afraid of magic and dominated by an oppressive order the party must lay waste to.2 Larian emphasises that all choices have consequences, and that the world reacts differently according to who, or what, the player is.2
Critical reception was strong: IGN scored the game 9.6/10 and called it “one of the greats,” GameSpot awarded it 10/10 and described it as “an instant classic in the pantheon of RPG greats,” and CGMagazine rated it 9.5/10, calling it “simply the best of its kind”.2 The game is presented in a Definitive Edition and remains the franchise’s flagship, anchoring a body of merchandise that includes a vinyl soundtrack release, the Godwoken graphic novel, and the tabletop adaptation.2
Tabletop adaptation
Divinity Original Sin: The Board Game extends the franchise into tabletop form as an epic adventure game set in Rivellon for up to four players, who take their heroes on a branching, narrative adventure of tactical combat and meaningful choices.1 It is based on the award-winning Divinity: Original Sin II video game and expands the setting in new directions with new stories, side quests, skills, items, and monsters.1 As in the source game, players may take the role of a flesh-eating Elf, an Imperial Lizard, or an Undead risen from the grave, and the game’s many branching narrative paths mean no two playthroughs are the same.1 The miniatures are supplied assembled and unpainted, and the line is supported by add-ons including the Miniatures Upgrade Set, the Nemesis Expansion Pack, the Haunted Keep Expansion Pack, and the Nightmare Dungeon Expansion Pack.1 The core set retailed at $150.00, marketed under the tagline “The battle for Divinity has begun. Choose wisely and trust sparingly; darkness lurks within every heart.” 1
Divinity (2025)
A new game titled Divinity was announced by Larian Studios with a world-premiere trailer at The Game Awards 2025, broadcast live from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on 11 December 2025.4 Billed as the next game from the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3, it returns to Rivellon under the premise that “the gods are silent, Rivellon bleeds, and new powers stir”.45 Larian describes it as a project in which the studio “unchains its ambitions to bring you an RPG with greater breadth and depth than ever before,” while qualifying the statement with the words “at least, that’s the plan”.5 The trailer drew wide attention, accumulating roughly 795,000 views in the period following its 12 December 2025 posting.4 The new title shares its name with the franchise as a whole, marking a return to the series’ founding identity after the studio’s work on Baldur’s Gate 3.45
Across its installments the series has been built around a consistent set of design pillars: a persistent fantasy world in Rivellon, party-based play for up to four characters, turn-based tactical combat, branching narrative with consequential choices, and the overarching theme of mortal ascension to divinity.231 Larian’s online infrastructure, including Cross-Save and Cross-Play through a unified Larian Studios account, ties the franchise together with the studio’s wider catalogue.25
